COVID-19 Update November 2, 2020

  • News

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Hurricane Zeta’s turbulent winds left millions without power along the Gulf Coast, including our Metairie office, which was finally restored just hours ago. The record season continues, with the 28th named storm, Hurricane Eta rapidly intensified to a category 4 on its way to make landfall near Honduras and Nicaragua.

Election Day has finally arrived, and tomorrow’s outcome will decide the fate of our country for the next four years. Louisiana native Judge Amy Coney Barrett was sworn in last week and will join her fellow justices on the Supreme Court to begin hearing arguments on several major cases, including whether the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is constitutional. Scheduled for November 10th, the court is expected to rule on the matter before its term ends in June 2021.

Employers will have to revise their COVID-19-related safety policies and practices to meet new guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on what it means to have been in “close contact” with an infected person. An important consequence of this revision is the impact it will have on employers’ ability to maintain staffing because it establishes a much lower threshold trigger for required quarantine. Plus, as the holidays approach, employees may grow weary of taking precautions related to the COVID-19 pandemic and may become more social. In addition, employers should be aware of their compliance responsibilities when asking employees to self-quarantine after not wearing masks, as potential Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) issues could arise. If you have any questions on what this could mean for your business, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team.

Despite the massive impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the U.S. workforce, some parts of the economy are still frantically searching for talent to meet business demands. Drive-thru job fairs are popping up all over the country, as more workforce development boards approve this method of recruitment. This innovative approach wasn’t necessarily spurred by the public health crisis. Our staffing company, Delta Personnel has participated in them on various occasions since 2005.

Lastly, please note we will be working on rescheduling last week’s episode of Dialed in with Delta: How to Work from Home the Right Way as we were forced to postpone due to the lack of electricity after the storm. Stay tuned!

Have a great evening and don’t forget to vote!
