COVID-19 Update July 24, 2020

Happy Friday!

Lots of information flying around about the next bipartisan Coronavirus bill. What we do know is that Senate will be working vigilantly over the weekend to finalize something by Monday or Tuesday next week. Congress seems to want to include another round of Covid-19 stimulus relief, however the size of the payments is still subject to change, with possible new restrictions like household caps or income filings from last year. Furthermore, the AICPA has released a new PPP Forgiveness Calculator that is free and available to any PPP loan borrower.

As the month of August nears, employers navigate a confusing landscape of childcare conflicts. The Department of Labor (DOL) issued a field assistance bulletin on June 26 saying employees could take paid leave under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) to care for their children when a summer camp or summer program had closed because of the virus. The FFCRA requires covered employers to provide eligible employees with up to two weeks of paid sick leave and up to 12 weeks of expanded family and medical leave, of which up to 10 weeks may be paid. Employers should keep in mind that workers who run out of leave—or who aren’t covered by such laws—may be eligible for leave as a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
